Obermain spa, Bad Staffelstein

Grotto made of light transmitting concrete

The public swimming pool „Obermaintherme“ in the bavarian city „Bad Staffelstein“ is Bavarias hottest and strongest saltwater loaded by its own 1600 m deep drilled spring.

More then 1.600 sqm water surface and more then 15.000 sqm sauna area invite to relaxing and recovering.

Within a larger retrofitting of some areas in the main bath hall, also the inside pool has been renewed. A new highlight has been designed with a Grotto in the shape of a salt crystal made with LUCEM translucent concrete: allowing to shine synchronized with the light in the water in different colors. This ambient lighting concept in combination with a special sound system in the Grotto and also the integrated massage jet nozzles in the water creates a wellness feeling for everybody inside this installation.

The former design of the interior pool was also fitted with a Grotto, but made with natural stone, covered with artifical palms. This design was very popular over decades, so the new design had to be a very special one.
